Grade Calculator

Work out exactly where you stand in any class. Enter your assignments, tests and projects with their weights and this weighted grade calculator gives you your current grade, letter grade and GPA points instantly — no sign-up, no fees, and nothing to install.

Strong work — comfortably in B territory, and close enough that a few good scores could lift it to an A.

What do I need on my final?

Using your current grade above (85.1%), set the grade you want in the course and how much of it is still to come — usually your final exam's weight.

You would need 101.4% on the remaining work to finish with 90% — more than 100%, so that target is out of reach unless there is extra credit. Your ceiling right now is 89.6%.

How to use this grade calculator with weights

  1. List your work. Add one row for each assignment, quiz, test or project. Names are optional — they just help you keep track.
  2. Enter your scores. Type the percentage you earned on each item. Not graded yet? Type the score you hope for and treat it as a what-if.
  3. Add the weights. Your syllabus lists how much each category counts — homework might be 20% of your grade, exams 40%, and so on.
  4. Read your result. Your weighted grade, letter grade and GPA points update as you type. Weights that don't total 100% are scaled automatically.
  5. Plan your finish. Use the goal box to see the exact score you need on your final to end the course with the grade you want.

Grading in points instead of percentages? Switch to Points mode and enter points earned and points possible for each item — the maths is simply total earned ÷ total possible.

Worked example: a weighted grade, step by step

Say your course is weighted like this, and these are your scores so far:

CategoryYour scoreWeightScore × weight
Homework92%20%18.40
Quizzes88%15%13.20
Midterm78%25%19.50
Final project85%40%34.00
Total—100%85.10

Adding the last column gives a weighted grade of 85.1%, which is a B on the standard scale. Notice how the 78% midterm pulls the average down more than the 92% homework lifts it — the midterm is worth more. That is exactly why weighted grades behave differently from simple averages. Try it above: the calculator is pre-filled with this same example.

The weighted grade formula

A grade calculator percentage is found by weighting each score by its share of the course:

Weighted grade = (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ total weight

With the example above: (92 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.15) + (78 × 0.25) + (85 × 0.40) = 18.4 + 13.2 + 19.5 + 34.0 = 85.1%. If the weights do not add up to 100, divide by the weight total instead — the result is identical to scaling every weight up or down proportionally. For points-based courses the formula is even simpler:

Grade % = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100

Grading scale at a glance

Every percentage converts to a letter grade and GPA points on the standard US scale. The full chart — including the whole-letter version many schools use — is on our grading scale chart page.

Weighted vs unweighted grades (and GPA)

An unweighted average treats every score the same: 92, 88, 78 and 85 average to 85.75%. A weighted average respects how much each item counts, which is why the worked example lands at 85.1% instead. Most real courses are weighted, so always check your syllabus before trusting a simple average.

The same idea applies to GPA. An unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every course, while a weighted GPA gives harder courses — Honors and AP classes — extra points. Our GPA calculator handles both, including cumulative GPA across semesters, and there is a dedicated high school GPA calculator for younger students.

Using this as a college grade calculator

College courses are almost always weighted — a syllabus might make labs 20%, midterms 30% and the final 50%. Enter each category once with your current average in it, and this college grade calculator shows your standing today. Then use the goal box (or the final grade calculator) to see exactly what your final exam needs to be. Checking early matters: a goal that needs a 96% in week three might only need an 88% by week ten if your coursework improves.

Five grade-calculation mistakes to avoid

  1. Averaging percentages that have different weights. A 95% homework grade worth 10% cannot cancel a 70% exam worth 40% — weight decides.
  2. Forgetting ungraded work. Your current average only covers finished work. A 40%-weighted final you have not taken yet can still move your grade a lot.
  3. Mixing points and percentages. If your teacher grades in points, use Points mode — converting each assignment to a percentage first introduces rounding errors.
  4. Assuming every school uses the same scale. Some schools set an A at 90%, others at 93%. Check your school's scale on the grading scale chart and adjust your targets.
  5. Rounding too early. 89.6% rounds to 90% on paper, but many teachers do not round at all — plan against the unrounded number to be safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade?

Multiply each assignment score by its weight, add the results together, and divide by the total weight. For example, 92% homework worth 20%, 88% quizzes worth 15%, a 78% midterm worth 25% and an 85% final project worth 40% give (92×20 + 88×15 + 78×25 + 85×40) ÷ 100 = 85.1% — a B. The calculator above does this automatically as you type.

What is a weighted grade calculator?

A weighted grade calculator works out your course grade when different work counts for different amounts. If homework is worth 20% of your grade and exams are worth 50%, a weighted grade calculator multiplies each score by its share before averaging, instead of treating every assignment equally.

My weights don't add up to 100%. Does the grade calculator with weights still work?

Yes. If your weights add up to more or less than 100%, this grade calculator with weights scales them proportionally (normalises them), so the result is exactly the same as if they totalled 100%. A note appears under your result whenever this happens.

How do I calculate my grade in points instead of percentages?

Switch the calculator to Points mode. Add up all the points you have earned, add up all the points possible, then divide earned by possible and multiply by 100. Earning 432 of 500 points, for example, is 86.4% — a B.

What letter grade is my percentage?

On the standard US scale, 93–100% is an A, 90–92% an A-, 87–89% a B+, 83–86% a B, 80–82% a B-, 77–79% a C+, 73–76% a C, 70–72% a C-, 67–69% a D+, 63–66% a D, 60–62% a D- and below 60% an F. Your letter grade calculator result is shown next to every percentage on this page, and the full chart is on the grading scale page.

Can I use this as a college grade calculator?

Yes — this works as a college grade calculator for any course graded in percentages or points, including courses with weighted categories like labs, midterms and finals. For semester and cumulative GPA, use the dedicated GPA calculator, which handles credit hours and weighted AP/Honors bumps.

What grade do I need on my final?

Use the goal box under the calculator: enter the course grade you want and the weight of your final. The formula is needed = (desired − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. The final grade calculator page goes further, showing what happens for every possible final score.

Is my grade data saved or sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your own browser — your grades are never uploaded, stored or shared. You can close the page and nothing is kept.
